Out of curiousity, how many people here don’t mind referring to themselves as an Indian? I personally feel uncomfortable calling myself an Indian, but I was wondering about the rest of you?
I prefer Indian, but tend to say Native American just for the sake of not confusing people. But my ancestors were Indian. I am Indian. I type NDN on here to make it easier to distinguish. But in general, I prefer Indian. But I say Native usually out of convenience.
“Native American” actually bothers me more than Indian. I’m from the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, and like the lovely Christina said, all my family and ancestors have been Indian. Non natives don’t get to call me Native American to try and separate me from the horrors of my ancestors or to make them feel like they are so PC and not racist or whatever.
I’ve never thought of it in the above context before but I also personally identify as metis which causes more confusion than I could ever want but I handle it. I suppose I also use the term NDN although most people dont really ask me or care to know anymore.
